| Cisco buys technology to create online communities | | NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc. said on Monday it has acquired software to create online social networking sites from privately held Utah Street Networks, Inc., the operator of Tribe.net.Utah Street Networks, which has seven employees based in San Francisco, uses proprietary software to create and maintain online communities on Tribe.net. This software will be integrated into the Cisco MEdia Solutions Group, Cisco said. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. - 1800 44 9900

| Cisco, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, and China | | I tried to catch the Cspan viewing of the Hearing on China and IT but unfortunately couldn't watch it all. Here's CNET's take on it. I haven't found a transcript of the entire hearing but it seems to boil down to the same argument that the US government used to allow Most Favored Trade partner status to China. If we engage them then they'll be better off and freedom will emerge. The big question is though, does actively aiding a repressive government in repression the same as giving them goods? The amusing part that I saw was the only Rep who wasn't critical of the companies was the Rep from Tacoma, WA. And who is close to Tacoma? Yes, it's Microsoft. | |
| | Cisco inks key rural IPTV deal | | Cisco Systems is vying to become a one-stop shop for rural telcos planning to offer IPTV.The vendor announced a partnership this week with SES Americom, the satellite video provider that will supply rural telcos with prepackaged video content through a unique deal with the National Rural Telephone Cooperative. Cisco will act as a chief infrastructure supplier and integrator for customers of that offering.Last year, four rural telcos began beta-testing IP Prime, the so-called “headend in the sky” video transport service offered through the NRTC that leverages the combined purchasing power of its members. That service is expected to be available this summer to the NRTC's 1200 members, which collectively serve about 30 million homes. | |
